DRDO Partners With Zero mK India On Quantum Computing Hardware

DRDO has partnered with Zero mK India to develop indigenous 20 mK cryogenic hardware for quantum computing, aiming to strengthen domestic capabilities and reduce import dependence.

India is moving to develop specialised cryogenic hardware for quantum computing, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signing its first high-value Technology Development Fund (TDF) agreement with Rajasthan-based startup Zero mK India Private Limited.

The agreement covers development of an indigenous 20 mK-class dilution refrigerator, a specialised cryogenic system capable of creating the ultra-low temperatures required to operate, test, and advance quantum computing platforms and other quantum technologies.

The project is the first high-value agreement under the ₹500-crore TDF corpus approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to promote deep-tech and advanced technology development in India.

Aligned with the National Quantum Mission, the initiative is expected to strengthen domestic capabilities in quantum technology, advanced cryogenics, and strategic research. Developing the equipment locally could also reduce India’s dependence on imported cryogenic infrastructure and strengthen the hardware base supporting its emerging quantum technology ecosystem.

The initiative brings DRDO and private industry together on strategic and emerging technology development. DRDO said the partnership could serve as a model for future collaborations between the defence organisation and private industry.

Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, industry partners and other stakeholders, expressing confidence that the partnership would support future collaborations in emerging technology sectors.

Defence Secretary, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh, along with senior officials from DG MCC, DG TM and SSPL, were also present.
